My son. This pictures is two years old. That is why I don't mind publishing it. He is now at the age to start elementary school. He even started reading Jump. To avoid that my son be ashamed of me around his classmates, I feel obligated to do a manga that doesn't suck ... but me, I love drawing horrible manga!! It's not too fun for him ... I'll have to be clever so that people won't know I'm his father.

Manta: He still hasn't woken up... Yoh....

Page 8:
Manta: It's already been three days. Was his shoulder injury that bad?
Amidamaru: No.
Amidamaru: He surpassed his limits when he fused. That's the reason for his present state.
Amidamaru: Urgh!
Amidamaru: I could kill myself. If only I had been able to deploy more force!! This would never have happened!
Manta: I'm... I'm scared. Amidamaru!
Manta: It's not your fault. This is all Ren's fault!
Manta: And who is the Ren? Why does he want with Yoh?
Manta: What is a Shaman King?
Manta [in head]: Yoh, you'll answer my questions, right?

Yoh: Umh! [workout noises]

[Yoh at 4 years old]

Yoh: [concentrating] Ha! Haa! ~leaf barely budges~

Page 11:
Yoh: Pouaasuuu.....
Yoh's grandfather: What the hell is that?!
Grandfather: Yoh! It's already been four years since you started your aprenticeship! And you don't even know how to invoke the spirits of the earth!?
Yoh: But Papy! Of course not! It's impossible to do!
Yoh: And anyways, how is this going to help me?
Grandfather: Those who think something isn't possible before trying .....
Grandfather: .... can't ....

Leaves: ~flutterflutter~

Page 12:
Grandfather: ... do anything at all!
Yoh: Ah! Mini-devils! ~gets poked by "mini-devils"~
Grandfather: It's a technique known to onmyoji. Japanese Shamans. The Shikigami.
Grandfather: This technique consists of breathing the soul of spirits of the earth into the leaves and to control them like a little army.

Page 13:
Grandfather: It can serve in different situations, from death to arson. This technique of the shadow has played a great role in the history of Japan.
Grandfather: If your progress permits you to be a qualified shaman... the mastery of this technique will bring you immense advantages in the future.
Grandfather: If you become an onmyoji like me ... you will be the favorite prophet of politicians and of rich people. You will never have financial problems.
Grandfather: And if you become an itako like your grandmother who educates disciples in the Osore Mountain in the Aomori region .. whether they be far away, or in heaven ... you will be able to call on a spirit wherever he might be to fuse with him.

[Miko]

Grandfather: Or if you work part time like your mother as a miko in a temple ... you will be able to hear divine voices like the himiko to save the population from great peril.
Grandfather: And even your father who loves only climbing (cliffs) ... by being a shugensha, he will be able to drive out a deity in the mountain where he will gain considerably.

[Asakura Mikihisa (without work)]
[Shugensha]

[Under the panel: The shugensha is a type of pilgrim who marches in search of spirituality.]

Grandfather: So!? You still don't see the point of being a shaman!? You have to show yourself honorable of the name of your family! You have to at least master the shikigami!

Page 15:
Yoh: I don't want to. ~Biiiida face~
Grandfather: What'd you say?!
Yoh: In kindergarten, no one knows what a shaman is. Anyways, no one else can see ghosts or shikigami.
Grandfather: You are right, a shaman is an intermediate between the two worlds.
Yoh: Yeah. It's no fun. We can't brag in front of friends. Even mom says that finding a job is become harder and harder. That's why I'm not interested in becoming a Shaman.
Grandfather: And what do you want to do with your future?
Yoh: I want to ...
Yoh: ... listen to good music everyday. Living peacefully without being bored suits me just well.

Page 16:
[Grandfather's overpowering voice: BAKAMON!]

Grandfather: So that's it? You're happy enough just seeing ghosts? You want to be a ruined shaman?
Yoh: ~clutching head~ That's no reason for you to hit me!
Grandfather: Pfff! That's really lamentable.
Yoh: Fu! I'm sorry, but for me, a shaman, it doesn't ....
Grandfather: I'm not talking about you, but about society.
Yoh: Society?
Grandfather: That is how the people of society forget all about spirits and about the ghosts that surround them.

Page 17:
Yoh: Really?
Grandfather: Little Yoh, come see something with me.
Yoh: What is it?
Grandfather: The city has already come all the way here.
Grandfather: The population is increasing and the cities are developing. There is nothing for us to do. I have no intention of complaining about the destruction of nature.

Page 18:
Grandfather: But we cannot forget that man cannot take himself out of the circle of nature.
Yoh: The circle of nature?
Grandfather: If we destroy the forests, the trees will dissapear and the air will become bad. If we tar up all the earth, there will be no place for the water to infiltrate and the rivers will overflow.
Grandfather: We are linked to this chain of nature. No one can know what will happen as a result of all of these transformations created by man.
Grandfather: The progress of education in our society for a man to be able to discern all the subtleties of nature.
Grandfather: That is why man needs marks to help guide them through their existance on earth.
Yoh: And what is it?

Page 19:
Grandfather: Total global knowledge, the ultimate ghost. An ultimate spirit that we could call a god. The king of ghosts of nature!
Yoh: The ghost of nature? .... a king?
Grandfather: There are many interpretations and names for this being. Only a handful of humans have ever been able to meet him. These men have transmitted their knowledge and prophecies to keep this legend intact.
Grandfather: So that man will not be controlled by their own desires that bring them on the path to destruction.
Yoh: Tell me, Papy! Who is it, who was able to meet the this king of the ghosts of nature?
Grandfather: Heh. That is the person ....
Grandfather: ... who has all the powers of the shaman and who can communicate with him.

Page 20:
Grandfather: That is the Shaman King. The one who we have forever called, "our savior".

Page 21:
Grandfather: Well, These stories most likely don't interest you at all. It's getting late. We're going to go home, take a bath and go to bed.
Yoh: Ki .... ki...
Grandfather: Did all my explanations give you a headache?
Yoh: Kickass!
Yoh: What about me? Can I also become a Shaman King?
Grandfather: [ O_O ] Hahaha! We don't become the Shaman King just because we want to.
Grandfather: But tell me Yoh. You're so lazy, yet this story interested you so much.
Yoh: Of course!

Page 22:
Yoh: If we become friends with this spirit who knows everything ... we can live the good life every day without putting in any effort!
Grandfather: [ O_o ]
Yoh: Papy! Teach me how to become a Shaman King! I promise to be serious during the training!
Grandfather: DOBAKAMON! You're too stupid to become a Shaman King!

Page 23:
[Yoh wakes up screaming: No Papy! Don't hit me!]

Manta: ... Yoh!
Yoh: ....
Amidamaru: Master is awake!
Yoh: That's it. What Ren was calling the king of shamans, the Shaman King!
Manta and Amidamaru: Kyaaa!!!

Page 24:
Yoh: I had forgetten that it was to become Shaman King that I started my apprenticeship. These past few times, I've only been thinking about my initial path.
Manta: But tell me! What is this thing? This Shaman King?
Girl's voice (Anna): He's noisy.
Anna: Someone told me you were wounded, so here I am ... what is all this uproar?

Page 25:
Manta: What do you want, you and that bundle on your shoulder? You must be in the wrong room!
Yoh: Ah! Manta! Careful!

[Manta gets slapped]

Anna: What's the deal with this kid talking to me like that?
Anna: I am a shaman, I am the itako, Anna. I am Asakura Yoh's fiance.
