Chapter 9:
First love, meeting again, separation

Page 145:
Mitsuhiko: What? You figured it out?!
Mitsuhiko: You know where she’s waiting!?
Conan: Yes. In fact, it wasn’t that complicated. It’s a place we know well.
Mitsuhiko: Us?
Genta: And where is this?
Conan: Genta goes there 5 times a week.
Genta: 5 times a week?
Genta: Can’t be the bakery in front of my house since I go there ever day. The meat restaurant is once a month…
Ai: So?
Ai: Hurry up and tell us! You’re forgetting that she’s waiting only till sunset.
Conan: No need to hurry. By car it only takes 20 minutes to get there…

Page 146:
Conan: First of all, the secret code written on the back of the card telling the meeting place is, as indicated, a reference to animals.
Genta: What are you talking about? We already tried that and it didn’t work, not with the donkey or with the squirrel!
Conan: It has nothing to do with their names…
Conan: But with their calls!
Professor: Their calls?
Conan: Yes, it’s the number of characters in their name. For example, what could be the number 6?
Ayumi: The cat says nyaa—which is 3 syllables.
Genta: Shiku shiku ho-shi is too long.
Mitsuhiko: That’s for insects, idiot!
Professor: The crow goes kaa, that’s two syllables. The horse goes hihi-n, that’s four more syllables.
Ai: …

Page 147:
Ai: Squeak. The mouse.
Mitsuhiko: The mouse…?
Ayumi: But that goes chuu chuu, doesn’t it?
Ai: Look! It’s also written on the information sign for the bats.
Ai: In English, the bat goes squeak. Just like a little mouse.
Ai: One of her parents was foreign. Difficult to know whether they used English or not but…
Conan: Squeak is exactly 6 letters! So there’s a strong probability!
Ayumi: That’s true!
Professor: But it’s not just the mouse that has a cry of 6 letters.
Conan: That’s true but amongst your memories, which animal did you often see?
Ayumi: Ah, I know!!

Page 148:
Ayumi: The hamster!!
Mitsuhiko: So the meeting place is in front of the person’s house who owned the hamster and that they often went to go see.
Genta: But that’s hardly a place I go to that often!
Professor: And I already told you earlier: 20 years ago I went to wait there and no one was there.
Conan: Wait a second, we have understood for the 6 but there are still other numbers, 4163 and 33 that represent animals.
Mitsuhiko: But there aren’t such long animal cries are there?
Conan: And what if we separated the numbers in several groups?
Ayumi: 4, 1, 6, 3, and 3, 3?
Mitsuhiko: A dog goes wan wan so that should be 11 but…

[wan wan = 1 1 = 11]

Professor: …
Genta: 33, could that be the seagull? It goes min min but.

[min min = 3 n 3 n = 33]

Professor: It wouldn’t be the chicken and the dog would it?
Mitsuhiko and Ayumi: Huh?

Page 149:
Professor: In English the rooster goes cock a doodle doo with is 4, 1, 6 and 3! And the dog, he goes: bow wow, which is 3 letters each word!
Genta: What is that? Cocadoodeuldou? The rooster goes kokekokko doesn’t it?
Ai: Cock a doodle doo is what Americans hear.
Ayumi: So the rooster would be for school and the dog would be for the Noi house?
Mitsuhiko: Yes, apparently she liked the chickens at school… and at the Noi’s house is where the met for the first time.
Ai: And the zero in this whole story?
Mitsuhiko: Animals that don’t have a cry doesn’t exist.
Conan: It’s not that they don’t have a cry, it means that it is a place without any animals.
Professor: Yes! Of course, her house! Her parents didn’t want any more.
Ai: So it’d be the Kinoshita home.
Mitsuhiko: But where is she waiting? She can’t be at all four places at the same time!
Conan: And what if we pronounced all four words in a row?

Page 150:
Genta: Shogakkou…
Ayumi: Noi…
Ai: Chono…
Mitsuhiko: Kinoshita…
Kids: “Shogakkou no ichou no ki no shita!!!” Under the ginkgo trees at school!
Conan: Yes, that’s most likely where she’s waiting. If the feelings she had 40 years ago haven’t subsided…

Page 151:
Ayumi: Hey… Conan.
Ayumi: No one’s here.
Conan: That’s strange. I was positive it’d be here.
Professor: After all, it’s not surprising she’s not here. A promise made 40 years ago…
Mitsuhiko: Professor…
Ayumi: She’s still here.
Conan: Hmm?
Ayumi: That white car.
Ai: When we came to see the rabbits this morning it was already there.
Mitsuhiko: I’m sure she’s inside and that she’s been waiting since this morning!
Genta: Let’s go see!
Professor: But…

Page 152:
Genta: …!?
Genta: No one’s inside.
Mitsuhiko: Maybe she went to go eat something.
Conan: No. There’s a fast food coffee that is still warm. Someone who just finished eating.
Ayumi: Wait a second, there’s a lot. There are at least for three, no?
Ai: Don’t look disappointed if she’s gained a lot of weight.
Kids: What?

Page 153:
[no text]

Page 154:
Conan: She’s so pretty.
Genta: That’s not her, is it?
Mitsuhiko: What a waste.
Ayumi: So professor! What are you waiting for?
Ai: 40 years. She’s waited enough as it is.
Professor: No, nothing tells her that it’s her.
Genta: Go!
Professor: Ah!
Professor: Uhh…

Page 155:
Professor: Hm?
Mitsuhiko: A…
Conan: A man!

Page 156:
Woman: Your grandchildren are very cute.
Professor: Excuse me? Ah…
Professor: Yes, thank you.
Professor: Uh… If you’d excuse me…
Woman: I went by these ginkgos this morning and they were so beautiful I had to stop.
Woman: It was so pure and so calm. That I came back…
Woman: Don’t you like ginkgos?
Professor: Ah… yes…
Conan: Wait a second. That woman…

Page 157:
Conan: When we were in 1st grade this is where Ran…

[Flashback]
Woman: Say? You’re waiting for someone as well?
Ran: Excuse me?
Ran: I forgot my umbrella so I’m waiting for the rain to stop.
Woman: I see.
Woman: In that case, I’m giving you mine.
Ran: But you’re going to be soaked.
Woman: Don’t worry about me. Today, getting wet is of no importance.
Ran: But…
Woman: I have an idea: this is what we’re going to do. When you’ll be bigger, you’re going to promise to buy just once one of the bags I create.
Woman: These ginkgo leaves are my theme. My brand isn’t known yet but I’m doing my best and one day…

Page 158:
Woman: You promise?
Ran: I promise!!!
Conan: Ran, what are you doing?
Ran: Ah! Shinichi!
Ran: Thank you!

[End flashback]

Conan: So if it’s the same person… No doubt. The professor’s first love is her.
Woman: Well, I’m going to go.
Professor: Yes…
Conan: What?
Woman: And then, I think my husband is a little jealous.
Professor: I’m sorry.
Genta: So professor?
Ayumi: Was she your first love?

Page 159:
Professor: Hmm..
Genta: So professor?!
Chauffeur: Will that be all Miss Fusae?
Chauffeur: Even though you were finally able to see the person you’ve been waiting for for 40 years.
Fusae: Yes, I wasn’t able to tell him who I was.
Fusae: As I expected, he seemed to have created a nice family and to be happy. If he learned that he made an idiot wait for 40 years, he would certainly be very distraught.
Chauffeur: Over the time, I see that you still understand that man’s heart.
Fusae: You know that when my hat flew over and he picked it up…

[Flashback]
Fusae: Don’t look!
Fusae: My hair is weird! They’re not like the others.
Agasa: You think?

Page 160:
Agasa: I like them a lot. They are as pretty as these ginkgo leaves.

[End flashback]

Fusae: He most certainly has forgotten that…
Fusae: I’m sorry, Billy… You are the best friend of my mother’s husband and every 10 years I ask you to accompany me here.
Billy: It’s nothing. If I refused my wife would be very angry. She’s a great fan of your brand.
Ayumi: Ah.

Page 161:
Professor: I still really like ginkgo!
Fusae: Finally, I think we might just come back here in 10 years.
Billy: I think that…
Billy: … at your next meeting, the wait won’t be so long.

End chapter 9.
